Dental Implants
Dental implants are one of the latest leaps forward in dentistry. They are the best replacement for a missing or un-savable tooth. Are you familiar with dental implants? Here is a quick guide:
A dental implant is a surgically placed artificial (often titanium) root. This artificial root integrates with the jaw bone and is used as an anchor for a metal and ceramic crown replacing the missing tooth (Figure 1). A dental implant is very stable, durable, and is the best alternative to your own tooth. Unlike dental bridges which require reduction of adjacent teeth, a dental implant is independent, which in turn makes it easy to clean with brushing and flossing.
Dental implants are often placed in two stages, the surgical phase is to place the anchor in the jaw bone, and few months later the loading phase, where the ceramic crown is attached to the dental implant. Certain medical and dental conditions such as advanced diabetes, poor oral hygiene, and even smoking may render a person as a poor candidate for dental implants.
If you are missing a tooth, or think you could be a candidate for dental implants, take the first step towards a beautiful smile. Call us to schedule a comprehensive evaluation visit.
